RetEval® ERG: A New Way to Evaluate Retinal Function

Our Commitment to Early Detection
At Haight Street Eye Care, we are committed to using advanced technology to detect eye disease earlier and monitor eye health more effectively. One of the innovative tools we use is the RetEval® Electroretinography (ERG) system. Many eye diseases can develop before noticeable symptoms occur. Advanced diagnostic tools such as RetEval ERG help us evaluate retinal health beyond what can be seen during a routine eye examination, allowing for earlier detection, more informed treatment decisions, and better long-term outcomes.

What Is an ERG?
An electroretinogram (ERG) is a painless test that measures how well the retina responds to light. The retina is the light-sensitive tissue lining the back of the eye that converts light into signals sent to the brain.

Unlike imaging tests that show what the retina looks like, an ERG evaluates how well the retina is actually functioning.

What Is RetEval?
RetEval is a portable, non-invasive ERG device that allows us to assess retinal function quickly and comfortably. The test uses specialized sensors placed on the skin around the eyes rather than contact lenses on the eye itself, making the experience easy and well tolerated for most patients.

Why Might I Need Electroretinography (ERG)?
ERG can provide valuable information when evaluating or monitoring conditions such as:
  • Diabetes and diabetic retinopathy
  • Glaucoma
  • Retinal vascular disease
  • Macular degeneration
  • Unexplained vision loss
  • Inherited retinal disorders
  • Medication-related retinal toxicity
  • Patients at risk for retinal dysfunction despite normal imaging findings

Because retinal function can sometimes change before structural damage becomes visible, ERG testing may help identify problems earlier.

How Is ERG Different from OCT?

Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT) provides detailed images of the retina and optic nerve, allowing us to see the eye's structure.
ERG measures retinal function, helping us understand how well retinal cells are working.

Think of it this way: OCT shows us the anatomy, ERG shows us the performance. Together, these technologies provide a more complete picture of your eye health.

Benefits of RetEval Testing
  • Quick and comfortable
  • Non-invasive
  • Objective measurement of retinal function
  • Helps detect disease earlier
  • Useful for monitoring progression over time
  • Complements retinal imaging and comprehensive eye examinations
