Our Doctors and History

"Haight Street Eyecare" on Fillmore?

Why are we called Haight Street Eyecare but located on Fillmore Street?

After graduating from the Southern California College of Optometry, Dr. Terrence Chan began his career in 1979 on Fillmore Street, practicing alongside Dr. Collin Chu. Just a few years later, in 1981, Dr. Chan joined Dr. Robert Chew in the Haight-Ashbury neighborhood, where he would go on to practice at Haight Street Eyecare for over 20 years. It was there that Dr. Terry built lasting relationships with countless patients and became a trusted part of the community.

In 2001, the practice was forced to relocate from its beloved Haight-Ashbury location—but not without bringing along the strong patient connections and community spirit that had been nurtured over two decades.

That move brought the practice full circle, back to 1752 Fillmore Street—the very office where Dr. Terry first began his optometric journey with Dr. Chu. Although Dr. Chu has since retired, his legacy continues to shape the way we care for our patients: with respect, compassion, and a deep commitment to long-term eye health.

Today, Haight Street Eyecare remains dedicated to serving long-time patients and new faces alike, now led by Dr. Daniel Situ, who shares the same patient-first philosophy that has guided the practice for over four decades.

Outside the office, Dr. Situ lives in Hayes Valley with his wife, Christine, and in 2025 they welcomed their first child—a baby girl. A passionate home chef, he has been featured in the San Francisco Chronicle for his culinary talents. In his free time, he enjoys cycling around the Bay Area and cheering on local teams--Go Warriors!

A true San Francisco native, Dr. Terry Chan has spent his entire life serving the community he calls home. After graduating from Lowell High School, he earned his bachelor's degree in mathematics from the University of California, Davis. In 1979, Dr. Chan received his Doctor of Optometry degree from the Southern California College of Optometry and returned to San Francisco to begin his private practice.

For 45 years, Dr. Chan was the proud owner of Haight Street Eyecare, where he built a trusted and thriving practice. In recent years, he transitioned ownership to his longtime associate, Dr. Daniel Situ, and now continues to see patients two days a week—without the administrative duties of ownership
.

Dr. Chan and his wife have celebrated over 40 years of marriage and have raised two children. Their daughter, married in 2024, now works as an Occupational Therapist, while their son, a graduate of a university in British Columbia, Canada, is a Senior Inventory Manager for a major retail company.

A lifelong advocate of healthy living, Dr. Chan leads an active lifestyle. He enjoys playing pickleball 3–4 times a week, still jogs regularly, and even plays full-court basketball once a week.

Dr. Chan strongly believes in the prevention of ocular diseases through comprehensive eye health exams. His patient-centered philosophy focuses on keeping you informed and involved throughout the examination, helping you better understand your eye health and vision.

To ensure the highest level of care, Dr. Chan integrates advanced diagnostic tools into his practice, including:
  • OCT-Angiography
  • Digital Fundus Photography
  • Corneal Topography

He also specializes in difficult contact lens fittings, particularly for patients with astigmatism and those requiring multifocal lenses. Whether you're a long-time patient or visiting for the first time, Dr. Chan is committed to helping you see—and live—your best.
